In contrast to enzymes derived from animal
sources, which require an acid environment, Berkana® plant-source
enzymes are fully activated in both acid and alkaline environments
of the digestive tract. Read more about the benefits of plant-source
enzymes compared to animal-source enzymes.
The Perfect Digestive Aid
Digestive enzymes to break down foods into simpler compounds
so they are properly digested and their nutrients absorbed.
Without these enzymes, food can go undigested, literally rotting
in the intestinal tract and producing systemic poisons that
disrupt the balance of friendly intestinal flora and impose
a toxic burden on the liver. When you diet to lose body fat,
toxins stored along with the body fat are released, straining
an already overworked liver and making weight loss and weight
management not only more difficult but even dangerous. A key
factor in weight loss and weight management our digestive enzymes
help break down proteins, starches, cellulose, lactose and other
sugars, and fats in our diet. As digestion and elimination improve,
the burden on the liver is lessened, and cellular metabolism
is improves, allowing body weight to normalize in a healthier,
steady fashion.

Plant-Source Enzymes vs. Animal Source Enzymes
Berkana® digestive enzymes are more powerful and effective
than enzyme supplements from animal sources, such as pancreatin,
ox bile, and pepsin. Enzymes from animal souces, including those
produced in our own bodies, are active only in a very narrow
pH range. For example, pepsin, a protein-digesting enzyme in
the stomach, requires a very acidic environment (created by
gastric hydrochloric acid). On the other hand, pancreatin, a
complex of enzymes secreted by the pancreas into the duodenum
small intestine requires a very alkaline environment.
Unfortunately, most people with absorption difficulties almost
without exception have improper pH levels in corresponding areas
of their digestive tracts; the stomach is too alkaline and the
duodenum is too acidic. Taking HCL supplements (betaine HCL
or glutamic acid HCL) to alter gastric pH can either cause the
body to scale down its own production of hydrochloric acid,
or even stimulate the release of alkaline buffers as a reaction
to the pH change.
The plant-source enzymes in Berkana® Digestive Enzymes--in
contrast to animal-source enzymes--are fully activated in a
very broad range of pH,whether alkaline or acidic.
